The Philadelphia lithographic firm of Bowen & Company (1859-ca 1871) produced this hand-colored lithograph of two bird species after original illustrations by William E. Hitchcock (ca 1823-1926) and John Cassin (1813-1869) also both of Philadelphia. The image was published as plate III in "Zoology of the Boundary" by S. F. Baird (1823–1887), published in Volume 2, Part 2, of the Report on the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey. The volume was printed in 1859 by Cornelius Wendell of Washington, D.C. The illustrations describe: Picus Scalaris (common name Ladder-backed Woodpecker, and Picus Nuttallii (common name Nuttall's Woodpecker).
