About this work

Watercolor and charcoal on paper board. The work depicts warehouses lining the quays at the American Base Port at Marseille, France, during World War I, 1919. Dock workers load and unload cargo from trucks with cranes. Smoke billows from chimneys. A soldier in the foreground is walking along the quay at right, wearing a tan military uniform. Signed at bottom right by the artist, "W.J. Aylward, A.E.F. '19"
