About this work

Mezzotint portrait of A. Beeler, an apothecary, chemist, and natural philosopher in Amsterdam. The “H. Langerveld, get.” inscription refers to the Dutch artist, Hermanus Langerveld (1777-1830). The “F. C. Bierweiler, gegr.” inscription refers to the engraver, Frederick Christian Bierweiler. Under the image is a poem, written in Dutch, that addresses Beeler and offers him advice. The “J. Kinker” here refers to Johannes Kinker (1764-1845), poet and philosopher.
