About this work
This baked enamel label is marked with the alchemical symbol for spirits and the text <i>AURANT</i> in black underneath. The Roman numeral "VII" is etched into the shoulder. Aurantium is Latin for orange, so this jar would have contained orange rinds steeped in an alcohol solution. This solution was used as a tonic or an antiscorbutic (to prevent scurvy).
