About this work
This blown and molded square–shaped bottle has a white oval cartouche and is marked "PULVR SERPENT VIRG." The jar would have contained pulverized radice serpentaria virginiana, or pulverized roots of Virginia snakeroot. Virginia snakeroot, <i>Aristolchia serpentaria</i> was used as a tonic, a diuretic, and a menses suppressant.
