About this work

This footed glass was likely used for entertaining in the presidential mansion in Philadelphia and later at Mount Vernon. When Washington resigned the presidency and retired to Mount Vernon, he took with him the china, glassware, and furnishings that he had personally supplied for the presidential mansion. He noted that that, at his own expense, he had frequently needed to replace glassware that was broken in the presidential mansion.
