Head of a Buddha

Head of a Buddha. Cambodia, style of Vat Romlok near Angkor Borei. 6th century. Sandstone. This Buddha's oval face, pronounced curls and minimal cranial protuberance are typical of the Amaravati style which flourished in Southern India and Sri Lanka. This Cambodian Buddha head is clearly influenced by the Amaravati style. Cambodia's earliest Hindu and Buddhist sculptures date from the Funan kingdom of the late 5th to 6th century. Its capital lay close to Angkor Borei. This was the site of the Vat Romlok monastery where a Buddhahead remarkably similar to this head was found.
