About this work
When the historical Buddha passed away, only his body died. He himself entered a state of complete enlightenment (nirvana). This is celebrated in Japan on the fifteenth day of the second month. On that day, the service focuses on a painting like this, in which the Buddha’s body is surrounded by numerous creatures mourning their teacher’s departure.
