Saucer-dish with an ochre yellow glaze

Bowl. China. 10th–11th century. Glazed stoneware, Liao ware (gift 2000). In the north of the Chinese empire, in the late Tang dynasty (618–906), a new powerful state emerged. From this state arose the Liao dynasty (907–1125), which succeeded the Tang dynasty. Although not Chinese themselves, the new rulers sought to adopt Chinese culture. This meant, among other things, that ceramic production from the Tang period was continued. The Liao period is particularly known for earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain with colored lead glazes.
