About this work
Neither learning nor lineage play a role in the pursuit of enlightenment. This is a ‘portrait’ of Huineng, an illiterate layman who was nevertheless appointed Sixth Patriarch of the Zen school in China. He kept his enlightenment to himself for a long time and worked in the temple’s grain store, pounding rice.
