About this work
Hakuin revived Zen painting in the 18th century with a precise characterization of the figures depicted. For example, here he aptly portrayed the resolve in Buddha’s face. Buddha descends from the mountain after having fasted and meditated for six years. He returns emaciated, yet in an enlightened state, ready to proclaim his message to the world.
