About this work

The central figure in this thangka (Buddhist cloth painting) is Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha. He is surrounded above by monks and flanked either side by a bodhisattva. Below right are two guards and between them the blue figure of the god of wealth. The stupa above Sakyamuni contains a seated Ushnishavijaya, goddess of longevity. This thangka may well have been painted for a long-life ritual.
