About this work

This mythical beast, together with a second, similar figure, originally flanked the main entrance to Candi Bubrah, the shrine to the south of the Buddhist complex of Candi Sewu. The trunk of this makara gradually transforms into a lion-like monster, while a man emerges from its mouth.
