About this work

Dwarfs bearing a garland with medallions. Half of an octagonal column. India, Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati. 3rd century. Limestone. Dwarfs bearing a garland was originally a Graeco-Roman decorative motif. It was introduced to Andhra Pradesh through commercial contacts between Southern India and the Roman Empire. This Graeco-Roman decorative motif was absorbed into the vibrant Buddhist sculpture for which Amaravati is famous. Given by Stichting het Amsterdamse Fonds.
