This 17th-century painting is in fact a forgery. At that time there was a veritable craze in China for antiquities from previous centuries. That is why painters began imitating or even forging old masters; in turn, their work became trendy and sold in large quantities. The pink blossom refers to spring, as well as to one of the popular themes in 17th-century imitations, namely a spring morning in the Han Palace.
