About this work
An era of turbulence erupted after Japan was forced to open up to foreign trade in 1854. Rai Mikisaburo sided with the opposition against government policies and was condemned to death for his involvement in the political unrest at the age of 34. This calligraphic poem may have been made shortly before these events and suggests that worry and doubt only bring joy to the enemy.
