About this work

This statuette is representative of the style of the Liao Dynasty (916–1125), a kingdom established by the Khitan, a semi-nomadic Tartar people in the north of China during the 10th century. The highly skilled Liao artisans retained the robust shapes and corporality of the Tang style, but introduced more details, especially in the face, hands, and feet.
