About this work
Ding ware from north China was admired for its subtle colour gradations and sometimes compared with ivory. It was generally mould-made. This made it easy to create decorations in relief, such as the flower pattern on the tea bowl. The dish, by contrast, has incised decoration. The unglazed rim was fitted with a protective metal band.
