About this work
This panel may depict Emperor Ming Huang (712–742) on his quest to achieve immortality. One of his magicians changed a bamboo cane into a bridge to the moon, where the emperor hoped to find the elixir of life. The panel was originally made to decorate a wall. One of its owners later turned it into a fire screen.
