About this work

These figures were originally painted and had harness of wood and fabric or leather. They were given in the grave, to accompany the deceased in the afterlife. Judging by their headdress and faces the riders do not come from China but from West Asia. Their presence in the grave of a high-ranking Chinese person reflects the flourishing international contacts at that time.
