About this work

Two Folding Screens. Both screens feature a nocturnal moonlit scene. A nobleman plays the koto, a Japanese zither with 11 strings, for a lady-in-waiting. This is a scene from Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji), an 11th-century novel recounting Prince Genji’s romantic escapades. The rabbits allude to the mythical variant of this creature, which lives on the moon and pounds the ingredients for the elixir of life in a mortar.
