About this work
Small terracotta figurines have been found in large numbers in East Java, in particular at Trowulan, the former capital of the kingdom of Majapahit. Most survive only as fragments, such as the head and torso shown here. Their precise function is unknown, but they may have been ritually destroyed after taking on the ills or sins of their owners.
