About this work

This headrest’s shape and decoration are typical of stoneware from Cizhou, in northern China. Cizhou ware is recognizable by its white clay with a freehand black decoration on top. The decoration featured the potter’s personal touch and also expressed the local style. This pillow is decorated with peonies, applied with iron oxide black pigment on the white clay base.
