About this work

The wife and possibly daughters of Darius III believe that Darius has fallen in battle against Alexander the Great. They mourn, pulling their hair or wringing their hands. Alexander sends his officer Leonnatus, on the right, to comfort the women. The woman with the crown is likely Stateira, the wife of Darius III. Numbered 24 in the upper right. Drawing forms part of an album.
