About this work

The personification of Pictura (Painting), dressed in a toga and sandals, sits on a stool behind an easel with a palette and brushes in her hand. Behind her stands Hercules with a cloak over his shoulders and a club in his hand. He offers Pictura three apples. Behind the easel a building with an Ionic column and a bust of a man on a pedestal. On the right in the foreground a putto holding a tablet and standing with his foot on a human skull. Drawing in a frame. Sheet 1 recto from a sketchbook with 63 sheets.
