About this work

Porcelain plate, painted in underglaze blue and overglaze enamel colors and gold. On the flat surface a portrait of Hortense de Beauharnais (1783-1837), Queen of the Netherlands. Around the portrait a medallion with leaf motifs. The rim is decorated with an Empire-style decoration featuring the crowned letter N and sphinxes. Light profiles on the outer wall and underside. The portrait is signed by J. Quentin. Marked on the underside with 'LE M. IMP DE SÈVRE' and the inscription 'REINE HORTENSE'.
