About this work

The cylindrical box rests on three cast feet in the form of standing lions. The high-domed lid is chased with a radiating rosette on a punched ground. The lid is crowned by a sphere, upon which a lion is crouching. It holds a shield on which a fantasy coat of arms is engraved. The finial projects with a pin into a hole in the lid, but is not fixed. On the rear of the lid is a hinge, on the front a hook with an eyelet. The lower edge of the body and lid is profiled. The body has a projecting upper rim. It is engraved with floral scrolls.
