About this work
Temperance plate of tin. The flat has a raised center with a representation of temperance. On the lower part of the flat, the four elements are depicted in ovals, separated by herm figures in strapwork. Clockwise: fire, air, water, and earth. The rise from the center to the rim is undecorated. The rim is decorated with the seven liberal arts and Minerva in ovals, separated by grotesques in strapwork. Clockwise: Astrology, Minerva, Grammar, Dialectic, Rhetoric, Music, Arithmetic, and Geometry. On the underside, a medallion portrait of François Briot is applied in the center.
