About this work

Gilded bronze fire dog. The molded part of the base supports a cylindrical pedestal upon which an oil lamp with a flame rests. At the base, two leaf scrolls emerge at the bottom and two acanthus leaves at the top, serving as a seat for putti warming themselves by the flame. A straight section with openwork leaf and flower motifs leads to a small square part, decorated with leaf rosettes and vines, which carries upward-pointing acanthus leaves. Finished with rosettes, egg-and-dart molding, and leaf motifs.
