About this work
In the 16th century, artists often combined individual enamel plaques to form large tableaux. The particular form of these examples suggests they may have been intended to fill a corner. It was not unusual for classical gods or ancient heroes to appear in support of the message in the principal scene: often they would symbolize one of the virtues.
