Silk damask in crimson, appliquéd with a wreath

Silk damask in crimson red, appliquéd with a wreath wound with spiral vines and rosette flowers on a grid of blue and beige. Texture: the motifs are woven in tabby weave, the ground in satin weave. Pattern: ascending checkered bands that widen horizontally to form pointed-oval fields. The bands are entwined with floral and leafy branches; at the knots a leaf palmette; on the fields a vase motif formed by acanthus leaves, from which three branches rise with palmette, acanthus leaf and lily-shaped flower. This pattern, which spans the full width, leaves gaps open in which half-lobed fields are formed by smooth bands, also entwined with floral vines. Mounting: the piece is three widths wide. Pieces of seventeenth-century damask inserted at the corners. Coarsely padded worn areas. Was mounted as a double curtain: the back of plain stone-red velvet trimmed at the top with silk brocade as BK-17287-A and BK-17287-B, at the bottom a strip of red damask appliquéd with yellow satin.
