About this work

The design of this vase, reminiscent of a boat, carries political significance and commemorates the French conquest of the port city of Mahon on Minorca at the beginning of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The flowing, rounded design is the creation of Jean Claude Duplessis, a talented goldsmith and sculptor who had been the artistic director at the porcelain manufactory since 1748.
