About this work
Tapestry, one of a set of four with scenes from the opera Rinaldo et Armida (1686) by P. Quinault and J.B. Lully, inspired by the epic poem Gerusalemme Liberata by Torquato Tasso. Wool and silk, tapestry woven. Paris, 1741 - 1749, Manufacture Royale des Gobelins, workshop of Mathieu Monmerqué and Pierre François Cozette. The scene of Armida falling in love with the sleeping Rinaldo is after a design by Charles Coypel, 1741, the borders after one by Pierre Josse Perrot, 1738. Presented by Louis XV to the Spanish ambassador Paul-Gérôme Grimaldi in 1763 Given by the Commissie voor Fotoverkoop, 1955.
