About this work
Small religious figurines, like this delicate group of the Virgin with a playful Christ Child on her lap, did not serve solely devotional purposes, but were also collectors' objects in and of themselves. They were admired for their costly material and refined workmanship, and found their way into an art cabinet or Kunstkammer.
