About this work
This bowl was used for serving chilled water. It bears the silver hallmark of the Amsterdam silversmith Jacob de Grebber. In the 1670s, he travelled to Batavia (Jakarta), the centre of Dutch trade in Asia, where this bowl and dish were made. They were undoubtedly intended for Western customers; featuring large, sculptural flowers, the decoration adheres to the Dutch fashion of the time.
