About this work
Writing case of black lacquer decorated with depictions in gold lacquer and mother-of-pearl. Against a black background, the lid features a depiction in gold lacquer and mother-of-pearl within a horizontal oval. It depicts ships at the roadstead of Batavia; below it the inscription: "The Roadstead of Batavia" and a trophy of arms with flags and the coat of arms of Batavia. The corners of the lid and the sides show flower branches; along the edge of the lid runs an inlaid border of mother-of-pearl.
