About this work

Ewer and basin. Silver-gilt. Germany?, c. 1600. The scenes of Mercury and Argus on the ewer and of Diana and Callisto and Callisto and Juno on the basin are based on compositions by Paulus van Vianen. On the basin the arms of Brabazon Ponsonby, Earl of Bessborough (1679-1758) and his first wife, Sarah Margetson. Gift of the Committee for Photographic Sales.
