About this work

Cuff of natural-coloured needle lace: Brussels gauze lace. The repeating pattern consists of a U-shaped cartouche with inside it a flower branch with two rosette flowers and two cup flowers. The 'legs' of the U are formed by two straight pillars, crowned by a rosette flower and three-lobed leaf. Under each pillar hangs an oval medallion with a rosette flower in the centre. Between the pillars and the successive medallions hangs an ornamental frame with five lobes and below it a swag of three leaves between two rosette flowers. The medallions together with this swag form the shell border along the underside of the strip. The motifs are provided with contour threads, the three circles in the pillars and the rosette flower in each medallion are provided with thicker relief contours. The motifs are connected to each other by a fine mesh ground, a gauze lace ground. The top side of the cuff is finished with a separately bobbin-made band.
