Overmantel Relief with Three Putti and a Cat

Three putti on the mantelpiece can be identified by their attributes as personifications of Fame, Liberty and Unity. The winged Fame flies in the air, blows the trumpet and holds a palm branch, symbol of victory, and an olive branch as a sign that this is good news in her other hand. The other two putti, who are not winged, sit on a rock formation. The left putti strokes a cat. Because of the independence of the animal, liberty is represented here. The putto on the right is recognized by the bundle of arrows as unity.
