About this work

Fragment of a chair seat, cotton, dyed by means of mordant and resist technique, painted. Design: two rows of flower and leaf arrangements - in total five pieces - between which smaller flowers and leaves, painted in different shades of red, aubergine, blue, green and yellow against white ground; outlines in black and red. Note: the fragment is padded and was probably never used. Pinned paper with inscription in ink in 18th century handwriting: THIS CHAIR SEAT COST 6 GUILDERS PER ELL OF /WW DE VRIES 1775. Oriental textile. On the back a VOC stamp.
