About this work
The Brussels painter Gaspar de Crayer is depicted here with evident pride, wearing a gold chain and medallion bearing the likeness of the Spanish King. Traditionally, the sculpted portrait bust was a genre reserved for members of the high nobility. De Crayer's decision to be immortalized in this manner was likely connected to his appointment as court painter to the Governor of the Spanish Netherlands in 1636.
