About this work
Salt was an expensive commodity in the 17th century and therefore took pride of place on the table. Salt-cellars were thus elaborately designed works of art. Here beneath the little dish for the salt is a figure of a nude woman with an anchor, symbolizing Hope. The triangular lid is surmounted by a female figure with a cross, the personification of Faith.
