About this work

The Valckenier family coat of arms is featured on the flat part of this dish. Depicted along its rim is the so-called court journey to the shogun, Japan's highest military official. The Dutch undertook this trip from their trading post on Deshima every year to bring gifts and pay their respects to the shogun.
