About this work
Four-poster bed. Ebony. Batavia, 1680–1720. This bed is based on earlier Spanish and Portuguese models. The floral decoration is characteristic of work by craftsmen in Batavia (Jakarta), many of whom came from Ceylon and southern India. The curtains are a recent addition. The colour and shape are based on contemporary illustrations and descriptions. Purchased from Stichting Cultuurgeschiedenis Nederlanders Overzee.
