About this work
Bust of a bearded old man wearing a cap with the brim turned up. Red wax, with dark brown finish. Hollow-cast. Condition: indented at the back; bottom filled and sealed with brown wax. Note: possibly a wax cast from a terracotta model for a relief composition, of which this figure formed part. The figure may represent a Jewish scholar. Comparable figures appear in reliefs by Giambologna. Compare: Aveng, Giambologna, figs. 199, 284.
