About this work

Standing young woman in contrapposto, with raised left leg, leaning on a chamfered triangular block; beside it a globe and on the block a large plank on which the woman rests her left hand. Drapery surrounds the figure. Her right hand rests on her left shoulder, her head turned to the right. The whole stands on an integral square plinth with chamfered corners. The sculpture is based on Giambologna's bronze Astronomy (or Venus Urania, ca. 1575, original 38.8 cm high, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, inv. no. Pl 5893).
