About this work
The bass viol served as a solo instrument or provided the bass part in chamber ensembles. Its six or seven strings are stroked with a bow. Made from gut, the frets on the viol are wrapped around the instrument’s neck. They help the player in finding the right tone while also contributing to the quality of the sound. The stringed instruments crafted by the Amsterdam violin maker Pieter Rombouts were highly sought after.
