About this work
The ring this young woman holds identifies her as the martyr Agnes of Rome, who died in 254. It symbolizes her betrothal to Christ. After her gruesome martyrdom, she appeared to her parents with this ring and a lamb. The animal refers to Christ (the 'Lamb of God') and is also a play on Agnes' name: the word agnus in Latin means lamb.
