Incense Burner with Chains and Sun

The octagonal, openwork incense burner has a vaulted foot, a faceted globular body in which a closed gilded bowl is screwed, and a high vaulted lid. Profiles composed of ribs form pointed arches on the foot and divide it into symmetrically curved fields of different sizes. The pattern continues on the body. The top is closed by a wide, profiled rim. At four of the eight points, this is marked by a curved cross-flower. Above a wide hollow list, the pattern of the intersecting ribs on the lid continues in three rows of printed pointed arches one above the other. Below, the intersections are alternately emphasized by composite pinnacles on the foot and children with rings. The pointed arches are crowned by pinnacles of different sizes. Only the upper two rows are more or less complete, indicating that the pinnacles above an octagonal foot possessed a high stem marked by a cross-flower.
