About this work
Belt buckle decorated with gold cantille work. By creating three-dimensional forms with thin gold wire, the suggestion of a voluminous jewel is evoked. This style, inspired by embroidery, was popular in the period 1820-1840. Cantille work is fragile and some of the so-called 'spiderwebs' have been lost.
